Krya Films Tamil Feature Film ILAI has been selected to the
3rd Indian Film Festival of Melbourne, 2014 to be held between 1st and 11th
May. ILAI is one of only two Tamil films selected for the festival. Directed by
first time Filmmaker Rajiv Reddy, ILAI was previously one of six films handpicked
by selectors for the 'India Project Room' section at the 15th Mumbai Film
Festival (MAMI) in 2013.
The Indian Film Festival of Melbourne is a Victorian
Government initiative that aims to strengthen ties between the Indian film
industry and Victoria, Australia. Held annually in Melbourne, actress Vidya
Balan is its Ambassador.
About the Film
ILAI means LEAF in English. ILAI follows the story of a
little Girl lost in a bustling metropolis. She doesn't speak the city's
language and wanders about its hostile streets to find a way to her home. Lost
and forlorn, she instinctively lures a kind baker, three young rag-picking boys
and a feisty old woman into her search. Ilai encapsulates the lives of these
reclusive characters as they zealously bond and set off unwittingly on a
circular journey.
ILAI was shot entirely on location in Chennai, Tirupati
& neighbouring regions. Manjula Odanadi, from the acclaimed Ninasam Theatre
Institute in Karnataka, plays the lead role of the Girl. Pritham Chakravarthy,
a playwright, actor and activist from Chennai and presently the Professor of
Dramaturgy at Ramanaidu Film School plays the co-lead role of the Old Woman.
ILAI is written by Subhasini Devaiah, independent filmmaker
and the Associate Director on the National Award winning films 'Gulabi Talkies'
and 'Naayi Neralu' made by the acclaimed Director Girish Kasaravalli. The
Cinematography is by Ranganath Babu Gogineni, an FTII alumnus and
Cinematographer of the acclaimed short 'Narmeen'. The Sound Design is by Amala
Popuri, the Sound Designer of the Indian Panorama film 'Vanishing Point' and
the Production Sound Mixer for several blockbuster films including 'Ghajini'.
The Music is composed by National Award Winner Isaac Thomas Kottukapally. The
Edit is by Heisnom Bison Singh, editor of films like the avant-garde
'Biographia' and the British Council produced 'Building A Green Future.. Now'.
