Indian designers rocks at the Vancouver Fashion Week

Day three of Vancouver Fashion Week presented strong with an array of designers inspired by vintage collections all over the world. The designers hailed from England, India, China, and, of course, Vancouver, Canada to present their Fall/Winter 2014 collection to the press, editors, and celebrities alike.

First off, the UK designers embodied vintage London style of the 60s and 70s. Fever featured looks more of the mod era with geometric prints and loud colors that were inspired by their global travels while AngelEye took inspiration from the 70s with leathers, lace, and sheer fabrics. Goldie focused more on vintage feminine shapes with a strong influence of modern rock and roll.

From the eastern side of the globe, designers from India and China presented collections inspired by regal clothing from the 17th and 18th century fused with expert modern craftsmanship. Designers from India, Parvesh Jai focused on embellishments and majestic color combinations with embroidery and black, gold, and champagne hues uniquely highlighting jumpsuits, long, full dresses, and boleros. Shravan Kumar, also from India, focused on a similar concept but stayed with traditional cuts of mens and womenswear with a touch of an English influence with embroidered crests, lapels on blazers in velvet, and modern saris. From China, designer, Ophelia Song, focused on traditional shapes and her use of textiles displaying prints influenced by her own abstract paintings of florals and tropical colors.

Back at home base in Vancouver, designers focused on eastern influences, power dressing and clothes for the price-concerned consumer. Romiélle, a mother-daughter design duo, fused their talents together of design and tailoring and created a collection made for the modern sophisticated working woman. Leather, tweed, satin, and fur were utilized in everything from wedding dresses to neckties to oversized coats. Papillon presented ready-to-wear designs for the price-conscious consumer highlighting knit sheaths, a-line skirts, and influences of art deco. On the contrary. Well Groomed presented a line of couture with an intriguing storyline. Throughout the show, the line evolved to tell the story, titled “Once Upon A Bride”, of a young woman blossoming into a beautiful swan-like creature, illustrated by using metallics and Swarovski crystal embellishments. Finally, one of the most captivating designers was Gardé del Avante, a jewelry designer who premiered his enchanting chains and feather jewelry canvassed on models in a simple black bathing suit. Among the bold pieces were chained sleeves that looked like body armour, exotic feathers, and chain combinations resembling fish scales.

“The third day of shows for Vancouver Fashion Week’s Fall/Winter 2014 Collections, presented by COVERGIRL, Pantene and Olay, was ignited by vintage-inspired collections hailing from the UK, fuelled by ingenious and exotic body armour jewellery from Toronto, and a finale bursting with Indian influenced couture creations.” -The Province

French designer Emanuel Ungaro visits Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week

The Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week got coloured in the ingenious flavours of international style when celebrated French couturier Emanuel Ungaro visited the event on the morning of Day 4. Ungaro wowed guests at the Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week 2014 with his love for Indian crafts and understanding of handlooms.

The 81-year old guru, who is known as Paris’ ‘Prince of prints’ in the 70s; was seen enjoying the shawls and stoles at EZMA, during the Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week and also visited stalls of designers Rina Dhaka, Pankaj & Nidhi, Paras and Shalini among others.

“It was a great honour to have Mr. Ungaro with us at this season of India’s biggest fashion event, the Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week. His ensembles created a stir in the revolutionary 80s with his understanding of sensuality, cuts and textures, which made his evening gowns a force to reckon with on the Red Carpet,” said Mr. Sunil Sethi, President, FDCI.

“I’m delighted to be in India which is a country known for its myriad hues, embroideries and drapes,” said Ungaro.

Interestingly, Ungaro, loves the ‘liquidity of a sari’ and the innate grace it offers to the wearer. “It has two essentials for any showstopper----movement and fluidity,” he adds.

Ungaro, whose designs were a tribute to femininity, with a play of colour clashing and contrasts, had launched his label in Paris in 1965. But it was the master himself who taught a young Ungaro the nuances of design----Cristobal Balenciaga.  “There was nobody like Cristobal, he was a maverick. His cuts brought out the beauty of the female form,” says Ungaro.
After working for 40 years in fashion and selling off his company, Ungaro is happy being an observer of fashion. “I love the retired life, after years of riding the fashion wave,” he concludes.

The British entered India in 16th century as traders but ruled for next 200 years. They came with their unique cultural identity and very British clothing and fashion sense. The woman of the "Raj" especially from the 19th century, lead a glamorous and enchanting life of polo matches, races, moonlight picnics, dances, cocktail parties, dawn riding etc .They spent many months in Hill stations to combat the oppressive heat and enjoyed a lavish, colonial lifestyle. They were mesmerized by the exotic local princesses, the opulent jewels, magnificent silks and exquisite craft. These women had access to periodicals, journals and novels from England and would incorporate the Indian luxurious elements into their Anglicized preferences and thus resulting in a unique mode of dressing and fashion which was particular to these "Memsahibs" of East India company.

This collection is heavily inspired by the captivating and bewitching lifestyles of these remarkable women who adapted and amalgamated two parallel yet contradictory cultures and produced a unique and novel fashion statement. The color palette of the collection are keeping the Imperial preferences in mind, like oxblood, navy blue, deep purple, crimson, burgundy, teal, burnt orange etc and have pretty English floral prints. The base fabric is pure, woven silk along with smattering of velvet, raw silk, lace all a reminiscent of the Edwardian and Victorian era. Intricate hand embroidery in motifs of blooms in thread work, cut work have been used for surface ornamentation and the silhouettes are heavily inspired by the elaborateness and conservativeness of the period , however they have a contemporary twist.

Bluebery DC Launches Spring-Summer collection with special focus on Aztec Prints

The Noida-based, Bluebery DC, a leading name in global fashion and export market, has created impeccable designs using Aztec motif in its Spring-Summer collection. With outfits designed by an upcoming designer Shetall S Khanna, the collection has been inspired by the bold tribal motifs of Mexico and is combined with ethnic detailing like sequin embroidery and threadwork. Aztec Motif is considered to be one of the new trends in fashion. The Aztecs were, of course, one of the most impressive ancient civilizations of Mesoamerica, where their empire flourished between 14th and 16th century. The inspiration for the modern fashion trend is taken from Aztec ceramic and textile artifacts, which featured bold colours and strong geometric shapes; particularly zig-zag lines, triangles, and circles, etc.

According to Shetall S. Khanna – Founder & Designer; Bluebery DC “In our Spring-Summer collection this year, the entire product basket revolves around the colors of the season, generating dark and vibrant echoes. The color palette comprises of bold & bright patterns of Aztec prints. The categories include dresses, skirts and shirts.”

An Aztec print dress is a must have this season. An Aztec print dress should have the right combination of cute and sexy. Dress it up with a smart denim shirt and you could also style a high-waist Aztec print skirt with a plain tee-shirt or pair an Aztec print top with hot pants. Make sure you’re not mixing prints with the Aztec unless you want to look like a clown.

You could wear an Aztec print for almost every occasion to carry your own fashion attitude. Put on an Aztec print dress if you’re in the mood to scale up the oomph quotient.

Macrame has been reinvented by incorporating it in a contemporary form. This collection is really all about textile art which has a handcrafted warmth.

The collection consists of collars, neck pieces, jackets created by using various forms of knots. The yarn used is Jersey .The embellished look dismisses the fact of macrame being boring .  Infact the textural embellished elements lend an artful look to the A/W 2014 collection.

Delhi Boy Radhey Patel aka 'Junior Picasso' receives multiple Art Scholarships in London

A student of 5th standard at Scottish High International School Radhey Patel awarded a distinguished Art scholarship at three of the best independent schools in United Kingdom, namely Merchant Taylors' School, The John Lyon School in Harrow and Aldenham School. This recognition award honors the tremendous effort, dedication and preparation Radhey has exhibited in his art and academic studies.

Child prodigy extraordinaire Radhey Patel rose to fame a few years ago when, at the tender age of seven, the National Institute of Fine Arts labeled him "child genius." Media outlets were also enamored with his painting abilities, praising the child for his tendency to create arts that, well, looked like the work of established artists.

Expressing happiness on the success of her son Mrs. Patel, the proud parent of Junior Picasso says: As a young child, Radhey loved to doodle, draw and paint like other kids but his paintings were different. We realized his ability to paint extraordinary things at such an early age where kids don’t think beyond having a fun-filled life. Refrigerators at home served as galleries for his art work and walls as canvas. As responsible parents we are promoting his interest so that in future he should be enjoying his profession rather than taking it as a burden.“

Radhey Patel articulates, "There is never a moment's doubt in my mind that this is what I want to do. It’s a very creative process, getting to express my thoughts and imagination and making the impossible possible. The first thing that pops up in my mind when I wake up is new ideas for art. I have always had a drive to experiment and make unique things with my hands. Art helps me process my thoughts and feelings and interpret them. Art is one of my languages for expression. Making and seeing art excites my brain and makes my day complete.”

In one of his paintings Junior Picasso Radhey dedicated to Nation’s father Mahatma Gandhi titled Transform: Making of a Mahatma attempts to show case how Gandhi, an attorney in South Africa transformed into a Mahatma during the fight for independence. The theme was to create a piece of artwork, based around the word transform - the word suggests something is changing or shifting, turning from one thing into another. I was inspired by the quote of “You gave us Gandhi, we gave you back the Mahatma - Nelson Mandela”.
Picasso and Van Gogh are his all time favorites. And he extensively believes in the theory of Picasso which says that every child is an artist, the problem is how to remain an artist once they grow up.

Radhey’s next challenge is to host an online exhibition of all his work in support of BBC Children in Need and contribute to the wellbeing of other children and help make a difference.

In the words of William Blake Radhey Patel says, “Without unceasing practice nothing can be done, Practice is Art and if you leave off you are lost.”

Ajay Devgn and Sonakshi gets worst actors award, Aamir gets Baawra Ho Gaya Hai Ke Award

Ajay Devgn(for Himmatwala) and Sonakshi Sinha (for R...Rajkumar) received Golden Kelas, for the second consecutive year, in the worst actor category at the 6th Golden Kela Awards Show, where the worst of Indian cinema in 2013 was celebrated with gusto.

With many ‘Best’ of the Bollywood Award ceremonies having already been held for the best of Hindi Cinema, the 6th Golden Kela Awards honoured the worst in Bollywood at India Habitat Centre, New Delhi on March 29, 2014.

Anant Singh, Creative Head, Golden Kela Awards, said, "In Bollywood today, the box office figures have no correlation to the quality of the film. Our sincerest hope is that 10 years down the line, the figures will be forgotten, while the Kelas they got are remembered".

The honour for the Worst Actor in supporting role went to Aditya Roy Kapoor for Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani – a wake-up call that acting needs a lot more than getting high! The Kela for the Worst Director went to Sanjay Leela Bhansali for Goliyon Ki Raas Leela...Ram Leela.

Other big winners of the evening were Worst Film: Himmatwala – for obvious reasons including over-the-top acting, irritating melodrama, lame jokes, mindless entertainment, and just about everything else! The Baawra Ho Gaya Hai Ke Award went to Aamir Khan for Dhoom 3, for the high level of stupidity in stunts and action, playing a ridiculously unnecessary double role and finally for succumbing to the dark side of Bollywood.

"Aamir Khan once said that he loves the Kela Awards, because all other awards are rigged. Wonder what he has to say about us now," commented Anant Singh, Creative Head, Golden Kela Awards.

Voters chose Party All Night from Boss as Most Irritating Song as it was too much to take Yo Yo Honey Singh ‘singing’ for Akshay and Sonakshi. Shahid Kapoor won the Why Are You Still Trying Award for R...Rajkumar, to make him understand that doing lame comedies and using senseless dialogues like "Silent ho ja, nahi to main violent ho jaaonga", won’t make him a superstar.

Like every year, there were some special awards given out by Golden Kela team this time as well. The Aakhir Kyun Award went to Priyanka Chopra for the music video Exotic, The Dara Singh Award for the Worst Accent was given to Deepika Padukone for Chennai Express, the Bas Kijiye Bahut Ho Gaya Award went to Sunny Deol and Uday Chopra got the Aap Yahaan Aaye Kisliye Award.

However, there were some films that managed to please the Golden Kela team this year as well. The Anti Kela awards went to four outstanding films, Saheb Biwi aur Gangster Returns – for being the only real sequel made last year;  Go Goa Gone – for being India's first ever Zombie Comedy and Stoner Film in one cool package; The Lunchbox – for showing the world that Indian films are not all song and dance and Shahid – for being the best biopic made by Bollywood in a long time.

Shilpa Shetty walks for Tarun Tahiliani at the opening show of WIFW

Veteran Fashion designer Tarun Tahiliani, known for his excellence in the industry opened Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week Autumn/Winter 2014 in New Delhi in which evergreen and gracious bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty Kundra graced the ramp with her glamorous walk to wind up the show. Other celebrities to join her were Harman Baweja and Ayesha Khanna, stars of her first production venture titled "Dishkiyaoon". All the stars looked absolutely stunning in Traun Tahiliani’s collection representing Indian heritage and colours.

Blurring the lines between adorning and dressing, between a product of style and a piece of art; the TARUN TAHILIANI Autumn/Winter Collection 2014 does away with the distinction between clothes and jewellery. Inspired by ornaments found all over the world, this season they dig deep in the trenches of the heritage of the world and strike gold.

“I am an individualist, evolving a new technique, which though not necessarily Indian in the traditional sense of the word, will yet be fundamentally Indian in spirit” so said Amrita Sher-Gil, who went on to interpret the life of Indian poor on the plane of colour.

“This is what struck me as a huge similarity when I was wandering through the exhibition, that in fact this studio does precisely that, straining to capture the last free flowing drapes into easy fluid structured forms, as observed from around the subcontinent and parade with the vibrancy of colour, the intricate embellishments and the symbols that came to define these races. To give them a contemporary form, to redefine relevance and most important, not to lose a particular vocabulary forever, by celebrating it in a new avatar everyday- Hence ornament as the principal embellishment is the glue that binds this collection together, “ this is how Tarun Tahiliani describes his latest collection.

The Satlada inspired series is an instant pick me up. These are statement pieces with necklines so ornamental they render a jeweller useless. Details of gold finery deck the collars and cuffs giving the illusion of layers of golden thread. The tunics stand out providing the ease of wearing heavy jewel patterns on fabrics light as air. Also partaking in the gold rush is the South Indian Necklace series. The iconic shape of this jewellery lends itself to the flattering emperor silhouette and lush necklines. The ornate kaftans balance the heavy gold pattern with recurring jewel motif making it luxuriant and indulgence ready. No jewel inspired series is complete without influence of the Mughals – the signature stone-work, miniature paintings and mango shaped motifs with Swarovski Elements represent a delicate glamour in gossamer, multi-colour hues.
From jewels of India to all over the world; Pleated Enamel is a slimming print, which creates the illusion of drape. Tops with mukaish-work and a full village-belle skirt add elements of fun, while striking kurtas and tunics with medallions and doubloons painted on form an emblazoned bounty. Paying homage to Tapestry; velvet, net and zardozi come together to form the ultimate peasant dress with jewelled collar. The delicate kalidar kurta in floating sheer silk lends elfin qualities and the Art Nouveau influence with its graceful curvilinear form makes it ideally suited for blouses.

There is also new found emphasis on print – multiscarf patterns where various squares form a singular print and create an optical illusion, creating tier upon delicate tier, make towering kaftans, unconventional saris and dhoti skirts; black and white Kaleidoscope based patterns shown in jackets with slits, short crop jackets and long asymmetric kurtas give traditional clothing global edge and the Jamawar based pencil skirt is a delicate work of seemingly hand painted filigree fading into a darker ombre creating a trompe l’oeil effect. Vintage embroidery in honeyed rusts is brought to life against black contrasts of velvet, seen on tunics with dolman sleeves, bejewelled collars and an anarkali, gilet and churidar pairing.

Taking the mastery achieved in years of draping and contemporising it into separates; this ready-to-wear collection offers a smorgasbord of options and allows the wearer some room for individuality. The dhoti and lungi drape inspired pants and skirts are a DIY solution, easily paired with daily urban wear. Every inspired theme has blouses with adventurous backs and embroidery that can be paired with multiple saris to create myriad combinations. Tunics, gilets, scarves, kurtas, vintage dresses, kedeo inspired shirts, stud-work sheer pants that jazz up any ensemble, graceful kaftans that fall like French peignoirs, and even variations of the concept sari from every theme leave you spoilt for choice, as any true Prêt-à-Porter line must.
The pashmina wraps are to be a welcome addition in the Indian closet. Open to interpretation, it creates interesting levels and falls differently on different bodies. A versatile object in moody hues, not only does it prove to be a graceful solution to layering on ethnic wear but also sits perfectly on layered skirts in urban gypsy mode. The idea traces its root in the early drape tradition of the country when the clothes would mould to fit the body and not vice versa.

Occasion Wear

The minarets and the in-lay technique of the celebrated monument directly inspire ‘The Taj Collection’. Georgettes swish and cascade from the shoulder in a butti dupatta of raw silk and zari as the kurta with its train envelope your silhouette creating an ethereal glow of light. There are anarkalis in sheer fabrics with hand embroidery and peek-a-boo backs with the intricacy of a Persian mural. Lehengas that carry old world traditions lightly in soft net and chanderi cut-work, and chikankari saris with pathra borders on soft net, it has the restrained colour palette of ivory, pale yellow and peach the belies a quite elegance and subtle charm.

‘The Crystal Constellation’ gives wings to fairy tales. Constellation inspired lehengas, in shades of twinkling champagne, poofing out like a fantasy with fully embroidered bodices. The net and lace in gold create a visible aura around the adorned as if you ‘walk in beauty’. Embroidered kalis on soft tulle are light and playful and yet refined enough to be a bulwark of ceremony.

‘The Regalia Trousseau Collection’ is bold in colour, challenging with passionate red, kesar and hot pink. High collared blouses lend you the arrogance and regalia of a Royal while feminine silhouettes with dori work speak of the humility and grace of an era gone by. The ombré dyes in three colours give the luminescence of the light shade while merging into the gravitas of the darker one. Gota lehengas and brocade blouses hark back to imperial splendor while the lehenga sari, authentic to its grandiose origin makes a truly blue blooded statement.

‘The Colour Mirage Collection’ is a burst of citrus joy with shades ranging from an aqua-like blue-green to playful pinks and rogue rouge, all given the ombré treatment. Shaded chiffons with sequins and sheathed corsets are a flirty feminine alternative. Paired with a flute blouse and embellished with sparkling Swarovski Elements, the colours blossom with youthful enthusiasm and Resham embroidered kalis with floral artwork give a light romantic pastoral air.

Quynh Paris Runway Show Blends Futuristic Structure with Rich Textures for Fall 2014

Couture designer Quynh Paris launches Q by Quynh Paris, a ready-to-wear collection of day-into-night separates and dresses, featuring her trademark asymmetric constructions that blend richness of detail and multi-cultural influences.  Her runway show during Los Angeles Style Fashion Week included 25 ready-to-wear styles that drew the admiration of a star-studded audience of celebrity stylists and their clients, including Christina Milian, Tamar Braxton, Rebecca Da Costa,  Nikoletta Barabas, Anna Maria Horsford, the current Miss Vietnam and Miss Nigeria USA.

Quynh Paris’ Ready-to-Wear collection artfully blends Asian influences with futuristic-inspired shapes and volumes accented by pointy sleeves, structural collars, sweeping arched jacket closures, and contrast fabric inserts.  The meticulously-detailed dresses and separates are intricately constructed using expert tailoring techniques, to create 3-d sculptural shapes that envelop the body like a cocoon. Blacks and neutrals are enlivened by jewel-tone pops of color, and iridescent wools are complemented by double-faced, patterned silks.

The designer’s parallel art career continues to spill over into her fashion: surface detailing, intricate beading, paintbrush strokes, metal wiring, and fabric manipulations, to create 3-d sculptural structures that have a life of their own, as they envelop and transform the body of the wearer.  “Fashion and art are intimately connected,” says designer Quynh Nhu. “Art inspires and uplifts my soul.  I love beautifully tailored garments. Adding art to fashion is what makes a garment unforgettable and inspiring.”

A graduate of the Mod’Art International fashion school in Paris, designer Quynh Nhu launched her couture collection in Paris in 2011.  Quynh Paris couture collections have been showcased in runway shows in Paris, Saigon, and Los Angeles, each season, since the 2011 launch.  Each season, the couture collections explore a new theme, as she lets her multi-cultural artistic creativity express itself through volume, three-dimensional shapes, fluid movement, rich colors and intricate details.

Neemrana Music Foundation presented excellent Opera "Romeo & Juliet" in Capital

As homage to the pioneer of Opera in India, Francis Wacziarg, The Neemrana Music Foundation is staging its eighth Opera.

“For never was a story of more woe than this of Juliet and her Romeo.”

More than in any of his other plays, the dramatist William Shakespeare excelled when he wrote the tale of ‘Romeo & Juliet’. Whether we quote “parting is such sweet sorrow” or “What’s in a name”, it is the bard of Avon who continues to be quoted so often almost four hundred years after his death in 1616. In the likes of the line “Do not swear by the moon, for she changes constantly, then your love would also change” perhaps we see the most brazen expression of love.

The Neemrana Music Foundation and European Union in association with the Indian Council for Cultural Relations presented the opera Romeo & Juliet by Charles Gounod (French composer) on 18th, 19th, 21st at 7.00 pm and on 22nd March at 4.00 pm at Kamani Auditorium, New Delhi. The show got a huge attendance & appreciation of Indian Audiences on the opening day of the Opera.

A symphonic instrumental concert on the theme of ‘Destiny’ is also being presented by the Neemrana Music Foundation and European Union on 20th March at 7.00 pm at Kamani Auditorium with the Orchestra of the Romeo & Juliet opera, joined by Indian musicians. This will feature Verdi – Overture of Forza Del Destino, P-I. Tschaïkowsky, Overture of Romeo and Juliet, and L. Van Beethoven – Symphony No. 5.

Charles Gounod who composed the music of the Opera had long been interested in turning the Shakespeare play into an opera. His librettists Jules Barbier and Michel Carré had managed to turn Goethe’s FAUST into an opera for him and so began their work on transforming the play. They purposefully chose to adhere closely to Shakespeare’s play as seen in the choral prologue which contains the words of the dialogue from the play.

The opera was first performed at the Théâtre Lyrique, Paris on 27th April 1867 and it became the most popular opera of the season and for all times to come. It remains one of Gounod’s best known and most performed works in the repertory of worldwide operas.

A French opera presented with an Indo-European cast, 44 musicians from Orchestra Les Musiciens D’Europe & 46 singers of The Neemrana Music Foundation Choir, this is the eighth opera production by the Foundation after pioneering opera in India with The Fakir of Benares in 2002 (New Delhi) and 2003 (Mumbai).

The orchestra Les musiciens D’Europe comprises of musicians from France, Belgium, Switzerland, England, Germany and Spain.

The Opera is in five acts: The Capulets’ Ball, The Garden of Juliet, the Cell of Friar Laurence and a Street near the Capulet’s Palace, Juliet’s Room at Dawn, and Juliet’s Tomb.

The cast includes Indian singers Amar Muchhala (tenor) from London as Romeo, Aude Priya (soprano) who has been a part of many other productions by TNMF, as Juliet, Vikrant Subramanian (baritone) as Mercutio, Sparsh Bajpai (soprano) as Stefano, Toshanbor Singh Nonbet (tenor) as Benvolio, Prabhat Chandola (tenor) as Tybalt, Madhav Raina Thapan (baritone) as Paris, Clifford Afonso (baritone) as Gregorio,  Ramya Roy (Mezzo Soprano) as Getrude, and visiting singers from France Paul Medioni (Bass) as Friar Laurent and Bernard Ohanian(baritone) as count Capulet.

The artistic director of the opera, Jean-Marie Curti is a Swiss conductor based in Geneva and directs the Opera Studio of Geneva. He has previously staged upto 100 productions.

Stage Director is Françoise Astorg, Set designer is Patrick Astorg, Lights Designer is Jean Grison, and costumes are by Françoise Boitard.

The Production team for this opera includes Antoine Redon, Emmanuelle Vassal, Akash Vincent and Mallika Taneja.

The Neemrana Music Foundation continues its work in promoting Western Classical Music in India by training local singers and musicians through master-classes by accomplished visiting conductors and voice coaches. TNMF has been committed to building an opera repertoire for performance in India and abroad and has been promoting cultural exchanges between the East and the West for the last 10 years which has just got the recognition and support of the European Union for this year.
