From the land of the Rajputs and Maharajas came the ‘SVA’ label by Sonam and Paras Modi with their collection “Aangan” at Lakmé Fashion Week Winter/Festive 2013.

Opening the presentation with a very energetic dance by actress Amanda, the first entry set the mood as a white long skirt with dramatic peacock embroidery floated down the ramp. The asymmetric peach kurta with a contrast green yoke was followed by a navy gown with sheer back. The brown panelled dress with a beige bodice and the multi coloured printed lehenga, and the blue cutwork long creation over a white skirt were a colourful rustic line.

Detailing was restricted to prints embroidery and little tiny cloth buttons, which edged dupattas, hemlines and sleeves or covered the garment.

Men’s wear was basic but with colour – white sherwani with woven front border, a cream one with embroidered epaulets, printed dhoti with brown jacket - gave men’s wear that simple rustic charm.

Choosing the perfect showstopper Bollywood actress, Prachi Desai in a lehenga, a crafted encrusted choli with multitude of tiny cloth buttons and dupatta was the perfect end to the show, which was a tribute to Indian hand work.

Gorgeous Diya Mirza turned royal bride for Shyamal and Bhumika during Lakme Fashion week 2013

Gorgeous Diya Mirza looked stunning covered in bridal ornaments wearing a red zardosi covered lehenga, tiny velvet choli and shimmering dupatta when she walked the ramp as a showstopper for Shyamal and Bhumika during Lakme Fashion week 2013, who brought the essence of the royal fashionable wedding season with all the glitz, glitter and drama with their collection “A Royal Procession”.

Lamps on the stage gradually lit up and created the Rajput/Mughal era of the show as the models emerged on to the ramp.

The designer duo’s romance with the Big Fat Indian Wedding continued for their creations inspired by the splendour of Maharajas along with 16th century couture, which had a blend of Mughal and Rajput aesthetics. An intriguing mix of silhouettes, embroidery, regal touches, contemporary colours and styling was filled with eye-catching grandeur.

The silhouettes for women featured traditional kalidaars, overlapping jackets, jama-inspired cholis, lehenga saris, fitted bias churidars, swirling ornate panelled lehengas, sensuous saris, ijaar pants, collared blouses, shrugs and kotis. Men’s wear had bundgalas, Sherwanis, churidars, bundies and jackets along with colourful turbans.

Fabrics had to be rich with raw silk, hand woven silk brocade, velvet, crepe, georgette and Matka silk, giving luxurious touches to the collection. When it came to colours, only the most opulent were used starting with flame scarlet, forest green, berry, earthy beige, sunflower gold, Moroccan blue, golden crème, aloe and black.
Detailing was in the form of fabric luntkans at the end of dupattas and backs of sexy cholis, while fragile nets over solid brocades and silks created a lovely texture. Waistcoats were teamed with ornate saris; velvet cholis gleamed with semi precious stones and flared lehengas swished over buckram petticoats. A mix of fabrics for saris, blouses, and kurtas had georgettes flirting with luxurious crepes and velvets swaying with silks. The gorgeous jewellery was restricted to elaborate “kaan phool” that matched the grandeur of the ensembles.

Embroidery has always been a strong forté of the husband/wife team. There was intricate Meenakari recreating the beauty of ancient carvings, zardosi, zari, Marodi, silk cutwork with metallic and velvet fabrics and zari peeta work, which were the mainstay of the collection.

“The Royal Procession” was so stunning in its style and finery that it would have been the first choice of royal queens and their kings of days gone by. For a grand show stopping entry at a wedding or a formal event, the sensational collection by Shyamal and Bhumika will be the first choice

Devi Devi: A unique exhibition by ten women artists

Vijaylakshmi Dogra of Art Indus Gallery Presents Devi Devi Exhibition - An exhibition by ten women artists. The exhibition is on from 10th October till 24th October at Art Indus Gallery, New Delhi.
"Devi-Devi" An exhibition by Ten women artist during Navdurga  from 10th October till 24th October at Art Indus Gallery is in contemporary context to raise awareness amongst people, and influence their attitudes and mindsets, drawing. The objective of the exhibition is to celebrate the power, beauty and glory of nine Goddesses from Indian Mythology. The nine participant artists are Arpana Caur, Seema Kohli, Shipra Bhattacharya, Jayasri Barman, Gogi Saroj Pal, Kanchan Chander, Bulbul Sharma, Kristine Michael and Rini Dhumal, Vasundhara Tewari Broota.

In ancient tales from our epics, myths and legends there are many manifestations of Devi, each one more powerful and beautiful than the other. Sometimes she strides like a warrior and then sometimes she is as docile as a doe. It seems, everywhere you travel, within and without, her various forms seek you out. One day she will appear as Durga, astride a lion, about to slay the demon. Then the next day you will meet her as the gentle Parvati, meditating on a mountain peak, or you will see her as Radha, beloved of Lord Krishna. She is the turbulant Ganga, flowing down from Shiva’s locks and then she is Sita, modest and virtuous.
She comes into our thoughts as courageous and beautiful Draupadi, then she glows like a precious jewel as the benevolent Laxmi. The next day she greets us with quiet dignity as Saraswati, the Goddess of learning, from Vedic times.
In these violent times when a little girl child, a young woman, our elderly mothers, are all becoming victims of terrible abuse and crime- we read about rape every day in the newspapers, see terrible images on television and gradually seem to become  indifferent to the horrors of our everyday life.
With these paintings, these powerful images, we pay tribute to all women  and celebrate the Goddess that lives within each of us .We salute  the elements that have formed us, as we connect to our ancient roots and remind  ourselves that we must be, forever humane, compassionate and venerating in our thoughts and actions.

Devi, Devi’s eternal presence- divine, protective and benevolent, lives within us all.

Archana Kochhar brought the Beauty Of Rajasthan On The Ramp With Her “Chokhi” Collection at Lakme Fashion Week

The collection was reminiscent of the beautiful creations worn by the gorgeous women in their havelis of Rajasthan. “Chokhi” by Archana Kochhar recreated the ensembles of those glorious eras at Lakmé Fashion Week Winter/Festive 2013.

Inspired by the colours, earthy prints like images of forts and twirling moustaches, shisha embroidery of the State, the designer brought these in a contemporary mode with acrylic cutouts and Rajasthani motifs. The colour palette had a rich offering of kesari orange, haldi yellow and burnt maroon, reflecting the glory of the vibrant region.

The silhouettes from the “Chokhi” range had modern touches as printed sheer shirt kurtas and layered tunics were teamed with matching leggings or loose but fitted Patiala pants. For a more formal look, saris, shararas and lehengas lavishly embellished with acrylic mirror work, zardosi, metal studs and wool added to the rustic beauty of the collection.

Fabrics were easy on the eye and fluid with satin, velvet, tulle, jersey, silk giving the creations a moulded or fluid silhouette.

Opening the show with a kesari shirt tunic that had an elephant print, Archana gave many options for women’s wear. Sari with mustache prints on kalis, wide salwars with kesari asymmetric kurta, tiny bolero for a pre-stitched sari; zig-zag prints for pants under sheer maroon net lehenga and a brown shaded printed sari with long sleeve peplum blouse were eye-catchers.

Egg shaped kaftan, dhoti with a long kurta sporting the fort prints, black printed skirt worn with a crinoline and tiny shaded bolero were kept within the theme. Interesting experiments were the wide glittering belt attached to choli, which clasped a sari at the waist and another pre-stitched sari gown attached to the choli.

The shisha embroidery was lavishly used for lehengas, shrugs, and waistcoats.

Men’s wear followed the inspiration and had an interesting blend of shirt kurtas and partially digital printed jackets worn with trousers. Bundies were vibrant in colour, while the dhoti was a stylish ethnic addition. For a slightly formal look, shaded orange/yellow jackets, silk waist coats, jackets with mirror work lapels and sherwani with Jodhpuri pants added some diversion from the basic looks.

Bringing the grandeur of desert style into their wardrobes, men and women will love the options offered by Archana Kochhar with her “Chokhi” collection.

Nargis Fakri dazzles the ramp for Ritu Kumar at Lakme Fashion Week

Day Four at Lakmé Fashion Week Winter/Festive 2013, ended with the exotic vintage collection by Padma Shree Ritu Kumar presented by Reliance Jewels and the glamour to the show was further added by stunning  Nargis Fakri who dazzled the ramp as a showstopper for Ritu's show.
Known for her in-depth research and study of different Indian textiles and crafts, Ritu Kumar’s fantastic collection called “The Thunder Mountain and the Curling Vine” was a kaleidoscopic journey of colours, weaves, styles and craft for the audience as they breathlessly watched the ensembles on the ramp. Inspired by the beauty and majesty of the deep woods and the serene mountains of the Himalayan region, Ritu allowed her creativity to match the glory of nature from these regions.

Using hand-woven back strap loomed fabrics, Bhutanese Tangkhas, prayer flags, kanni weaves, hand spun khadi, woven silks, leather, Lycra jersey  and adding the beautiful jamavar motifs of Kashmir; the result was a fascinating line of contemporary fashion with vintage textiles, which bore Ritu’s individualistic style for her prét brand “Label”.

Converting some of the weaves into prints, the fabrics used ranged from silk to woven shawls in rich deep tones that recreated the beauty of the hilly states. Unfolding the drama of the costumes from the mountain kingdoms, the long-sleeved coat dresses with a mix of prints/embellishments and kurtas with the Himalayan flavour, trousers, leggings, the kira (wrap around skirt from Bhutan), wrap jackets, dresses, kaftans and capes were seen creating unconventional impact on the catwalk.

The three dramatic giant printed and embellished capes were stunners on the ramp when they appeared in quick succession. The brocade short jacket with sheer sleeves, pencil skirt with belted shawl collar jacket, long slim embroidered skirt with a pure white blouse, very heavy wool midi with contrasting bands and the belted double breasted coat with rust collar, were inspired by the beauty of the hilly heaven. Cigarette pants with a new version of the biker jacket, the scenic embroidered swing coat, textured woollen creations and the multi-fabric gathered dress were part of the fabulously crafted collection.

The second half devoted to the most luxurious kalidaar kurtas in shades of white, ecru, khaki, beige, mid-brown swirled on the ramp with multiple kalis whirling around the beautiful models wearing the scintillating Reliance Jewels collection of jhumkas, shoulder dusters, kaan phool, chandelier earrings, the visual was glamorous.

Ending the show was the gorgeous Nargis Fakri, star of the latest hit “Madras Café” who glided in displaying a magnificent diamond polki set, Haath Phool and Maang Tikka from the Reliance Jewels collection, in a white fully embellished, layered, floor-length, kalidaar  kurta and flowing dupatta.
